Last week has been exhausting. I was wiped Thursday and opted for a long nap after work than going to Team Steam. I was completely drained. Later that night I was able to get in 5 miles easy on the treadmill before calling it a day.

Last Friday we had an exciting delivery, our new Garmin 910 XTs are here!!

If you haven’t seen anything about it, here is some information on Garmin’s YouTube channel.

I immediately got them unboxed and charging.

So glad that they include quick start guides in about 15 languages. I can brush up on my Mandarin while I wait for this thing to charge.

For size comparison here is the 910 next to the 305 and the 210. I like the 210 watch-like feel, but it is only a running watch and if it’s going to mess up keeping distance and pace correctly, then it will be only a back up watch. The 910 is thinner and sleeker than the older 305 model and the display is much larger on the 910.

So this post won’t be a full on gear review since I need some time with the watch to learn the features. Then I can come back with more comments and what I like and changes I would want in a future model. Plus there are two key elements still missing from my training to make a full review and that is cycling outdoors and swimming. I will be doing a bit of that and while my effort will be elementary, hopefully sharing my experience will help others decide what gear may be best for them.

4.14 Miles Intervals (Team Steam – Envelope Track Workout, 29:08, 7:03 Pace)

Tuesday’s Team Steam workout was a new one, it was called an “Envelope Track Workout”. Basically that meant pull various track distances out of a hat and run them until we met or exceeded 4 miles of workout. We also kept our recoveries as short as possible, which was about 30-40 seconds for me. What made this strange was not really knowing what was next. How do I run my 400M pace without knowing if the next go around was 120o, 800, or 400? I made sure to keep my effort above my goal pace for this race, but I didn’t go all out either until we got our last 400M and felt like I could run what has been my pace for them lately (1:31 – 5:58 Pace).

I can’t say this was my favorite workout. I would rather know what I’m in for upfront, even if it’s 12 x 400s, 10 x 800s or whatever.

I did get to wear my Marathon Maniacs jersey. One thing I can’t explain is the design that includes a cat and a guy on the back. So I went out and looked up the history, makes more sense now!

This week has been work of trying to keep pace, in all aspects. For running, my legs have either been stale, the heat has been very hot (80+ degrees) or both. All I can do is try to move forward and keep at it even when my pace suffers.

The hill workouts with Team Steam have been really challenging and good for me. Still my hips are tight so I’ve been streaching, including lying on the ground and putting my legs up. Coco was a big help too. 🙂

We did a race on Saturday and from my workout list above you can see it wasn’t my best, but I will get a race report posted how it went next.

We have been having amazing mild and beautiful weather. Wednesday was windy, but I had 8 easy so the wind really wasn’t a factor since I wasn’t trying to hit a particular pace. Thursday our Team Steam workout was a but kicking hill workout that was 1 mile repeats that had a perfect balance of .5 mile climb and .5 mile cruising back down. I am loving these workouts. The scenery and turns keep it interesting.

She’s a Maniac

Last weekend resulted in two days of sick with sinus junk and fever, not a fun way to spend the weekend. I got in miles when my head would stop pounding, but it was unpleasant. I did get in 8 that felt good Monday and my quad pain seems to have faded. Tuesday at Team Steam my legs felt very stale. Our workout was 3-6 x 1000M with 90 sec recoveries in a marked area within a cemetary. I’m new to doing marked speed work outside of a track, but it was nice to have scenery. The pace was supposed to be 5K Pace or faster, but with my recovery from Boston I just put in the effort I could to make it through 3 and then did 1 loop at an easier pace.

I forgot to mention that I’ve changed my hair color to blonde. I’ve been brunette for 2 years so it felt like time to switch it up.

I meant to have Rob take my picture before work, but forgot so this creepy Starbucks bathroom pic will have to do instead.

Thursday night Team Steam workout was awesome! We did hill ladders up the big Steamboat Classic hill in Glenn Oak Park. They had cones set up going up the hill. You started at the first cone ran up two cones and came back down the hill one cone, then up two more cones, back down one cone until you made it to the top. From the top you ran back down to the start. Then you could repeat the workout as many times as you wanted. I did two rounds on my own and the last one with Jamie. It was such a fun workout and I hope we get to do it again!

This weekend is theIL Marathon weekend! Rob and I will be running the 5K tonight for fun and then the marathon tomorrow morning. This will only be 12 days since Boston. My main goal is getting to become a Marathon Maniac! As Rob and I continue our running adventures I want to see how to multi-marathon close together and learn how to manage recovery.

So I will be posting all of the adventures this weekend and tweeting!!

Arse Back Home

I do love the song “Ass Back Home” and that has been the motto around here the last couple of days. The morning after Boston we stayed in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. A place we may have never seen if it weren’t for driving to Boston last year. We love the area and the hotel. Here is the view of the falls outside our window. Sorry for the blur and glare.

After 8 hours of driving we relaxed in the hotel hot tub that is indoor but is all windows that have the view of the nature surrounding the hotel. The hot tub felt so good after that marathon course and drive.

The next morning we were up and drove the 11 remaining hours home. As soon as we got in the door we changed into running clothes. Rob got in a quality run on the treadmill and I did a sad limpy run/walk for 1.5 miles in the neighborhood. I was so sore, but knew just the light movement would be good for me as an active recovery. My left quad is very sore and will take the longest to heal. Then I spent time on the foam roller and while it hurt so bad my muscles felt looser afterward.

Thursday has been all about spring cleaning and getting the house back in order. I spent more time on the foam roller in hopes to make it to Team Steam workout that night. Even if I would be very stiff and slow. Rob joined our workout and enjoyed the change of scenery. Drew hung with me as I worked through my stride. We had a 4 mile loop with hills and I wasn’t sure if my legs would be able to handle it. We took it really slow at the start, but then we got into some 9 min mile pacing and I felt much better. Rob and our friend Jamie got in a couple extra miles after the first pass and Drew and I finished with 5 miles. I’m so happy that I was able to get in 5 and feel better. I will spend more time on the foam roller and see what kind of recovery miles I can get in over the weekend.

It’s the Final Countdown

Cue Europe cause it’s the final countdown!! 12 Days until the Boston Marathon, but even before the marathon there are so many other items like Team Steam training nights, Lincoln Presidential Half Marathon, dinner with my parents, get ready for Easter, packing to leave, Boston Red Sox game, Boston 5K and hopefully some meet up with friends in Beantown….whew! I think my lists have lists at this point.

Yesterday I had 8 Miles with 6 @ Tempo (7:35 pace) on the treadmill and that went well. Tonight was Team Steam night. Drew wasn’t able to make the training session so the wolf pack was running solo tonight.

I’m not from the area so I don’t know anyone so I planned to chill and just wait it out until we got our training instructions. Instead I got surprised and saw Jamie, another local runner that I met at past races. Us at a local half marathon last year.

I haven’t seen her in awhile so it was so nice to catch up on our training, recent races, and planned races for the year. This is her first year doing this Team Steam program too.

The weather was very mild and a bit chilly. Tonight everyone was going to be doing the same workout: an intro hill route at their own pace. The group got going with a quick warm up and then we had 2 laps of a training loop that was approximately 2.5 Miles. It included the first big part of the hill that we will traverse on race day. While running I got to chat with another lady and guy and swapped stories of past marathons. I have to say I loved the hill workout. I made sure to take it easy for Boston. Even being conservative it felt good to work out on the hill, my muscles were immediately burning.

Time passed by so quickly and it felt like a productive workout. I’m looking forward to our next session!
