2015 We Care Twin Cities – Kid’s Run, 5K, and 10K

The last weekend of September was the We Care Twin Cities race event in town. Friday night weather was perfect, sunny and upper 60s or low 70s. We got to enjoy some time with friends while we waited for the races to begin. Friday was a kids 1/4 mile run and a family 5K race. The kid’s run was Chase’s furthest distance so far and she ran the whole way. It was so awesome seeing the determination on her face and how much she was loving it at the same time. At the end the kids got medals that were donated from past races by other runners. We Care highlights environmental awareness and information on reuse and recycling.

Up next was the 5K. Rob and I ran together and Rob pushed Chase in the stroller. She spent almost 80% of the time asking where one of her friends was that was watching the race. 🙂 We ran it easy paced, which for me these days is pretty slow, still it felt good to be out running as a family. 😀 30:03, 10:01 Pace

The next morning Rob and I ran the 10K together. The temperature was perfect, sunny and in the 50s. Again we got time to hang out with friend and even ran with our friend Jon for a few miles. I kept my pace easy and conversational. I felt good the entire race, but I didn’t want to push my pace because I didn’t want to risk feeling bad later. It was like a nice little date getting that much quality 1:1 time with Rob. 🙂 Turns out after the race we found out that Rob got 3rd in his Age Group! 🙂 1:00:50, 9:49 Pace

I’m not sure what races (if any) we will get in before the baby arrives. It will likely depend on weather, how I’m feeling, and what other things we have going on. If we end up running something I’ll get around to posting about it eventually. 😉

2015 IL Marathon Weekend

Race Takeaway: Runners tough it out, rain or shine.

Friday, April 24th started the Illinois Marathon weekend with a packet pickup and 5K.

ILMarathon2015-01Rob, Drew, and I decided to run the 5K together for fun. This race size has grown over the years to around 7,000 people. They implemented corral starts for all races, which is nice. I never look at this event as a true ‘race’, but an excuse to run. Although it seems like they keep moving the start time later and later (or I’m imagining things). The race didn’t start until 7:30pm this year. If it were to get any later I may re-think running this in the future. Afterward we headed home for our early wake up call of 3am.

On a cool side note, my new apple watch was delivered and waiting for me when we got home. I ran the half marathon with it and my Garmin 910xt to compare the data afterward.

Saturday, April 25th 3am came quickly with the normal groggy wake up and second guessing why I choose to do this to myself, but that usually passes after the first cup of coffee. 😀 We were out the door just after 4am and were in the parking lot by 5am. The race start was 7am, but timing of any race road closures or other factors I prefer to be parked early and wait. We all tried to cat nap in the car until it was closer to time to line up. The weather would not be favorable. I was anticipating spitting cold rain off and on and 15-20 mph winds at times making the temperature feel more like upper 30s. I’ve become a weather wuss and would rather feel a little over dress than under, a personal choice really. So while waiting in the car I was able to debate my clothing options. I went with capris and a stocking cap (which I should have brought a running baseball style hat instead), but I was originally planning on just a long sleeved shirt. At the last minute I changed into a short sleeve shirt and then wore a light weight jacket over top. The good thing is that allowed me to carry my phone and key in my pockets versus a belt, but they asked that anyone wearing their bib under layers lift up their shirt or unzip for the chip mat readers. It was a tradeoff, but I’m glad I had the extra layer from the rain.

We waited as long as we could before lining up. Rob had corral A and I had B, but he just ended up staying with me since it really didn’t matter when we started. We also ran into our friend Carissa so we got couple minutes to chat before we took off. I probably looked a little silly holding up my jacket to make sure my bib was exposed at the start line for the chip mat, but wearing two watches probably was also helping with my dork factor. 😀

As we headed out the first few miles there was barely a mist, but then it started raining and it continued on and off throughout the rest of the race. It was enough rain that I decided to pull down my jacket sleeve over my watch to protect it. I figured I really only wanted to see the data after my race, it wasn’t needed mid-race. I was able to keep pretty even pacing, except in the ~20+mph winds and downpours, multiple times on the course. I was happy with my choice in having a jacket because I could unzip the front when the weather was better and zip back up when it got worse. I did try to push my pace at the halfway point to the end, but I wasn’t able to pick up my speed. It was just wasn’t my day for that apparently. I felt terrible for those running the marathon in the bad weather conditions, especially for those who had ‘fist marathon’ bibs on their backs. 😦 Also, I felt terrible for the volunteers having to deal with the weather and I tried to thank as many of them as possible along the way. Before I knew it I was at the finish and luckily a volunteer reminded me to unzip my jacket to make sure my bib scanned as I crossed the finish mat. Unzipping my jacket caused it to be clunky with my phone and key in the pockets, but oh well. I was finished (1:56) and ready to get dry and warm again. Rob was there waiting for me and finished 1:47. We both improved our times from our last half marathon race. Drew has been dealing with injuries and was able to finish. Hopefully some more rehabilitation time for his hip/leg will help for our summer race plans.

After my race I found out that my wet jacket sleeve must have touched my apple watch and stop my workout. The recording stopped around mile 11. As far as I know there is not a locking feature on the touch screen for workout purposes. Since I don’t see this watch replacing my Garmin, it was annoying, but not critical since it was just extra data. I’m sure there will be a lot of reviews of the apple watch over time, but I may do one just to share my experiences, especially if/how I incorporate it into workouts in the future.

Unfortunately for those running the full marathon the weather got so bad that they had to cancel the race after 3 hours and 15 minutes due to the conditions and lighting. Our hearts goes out to those who were toughing it out on the course and then had to stop. 😦 IL Marathon has identified those that were not able to finish and are offering them complimentary entry to 2016.

2014 Jingle Bell Normal – 5K – 24:36

Race Takeaway: I just need to keep plugging away at my training and racing.

Sunday I ran the local Jingle Bell 5K. While it was a nice 50 degrees outside the winds were 17mph which were no fun for racing. Rob, Chase, and I went out for breakfast and then picked up my packet early. The race wasn’t until 1pm and that would be in the middle of Chase’s nap so Rob and Chase stayed home while I ran this one.

The expo and race are hosted at Heartland Community College, which means ample parking, facilities (aka bathrooms), and space to relax and get ready. Chase enjoyed going to the expo and running around the gymnasium. 🙂

When Chase took her nap I headed back over for the race around noon. I had plenty of time on my hands so I headed outside in my warm up pants and jacket and did a 2.54 mile warm up. I got to see a lot of our friends and catch up on how their racing season was going. I chose to wear compression socks, shorts, long sleeves. I decided against a hat so I wouldn’t get too warm.

The course was new this year so I had no idea where we would be running, but I just followed the herd. We ran around the parking lot, out on to the constitution trail, around the inside the Corn Crib Stadium field, and then out and around the parking lot of Heartland to the finish. I felt fine the first 1.5 miles, but then we had the head winds and about .5 mile incline coming back on the constitution trail to Heartland. I tried pushing through the winds, but it felt like running in slow motion. It felt like time was moving slowly and the race felt longer than my 10K the previous week! Finally the torture was over and my time was 24:36, fourth in my age group.

I’m glad that I was able to get out and race, espeically with a race in town. It proved to be a good workout.

2014 We Care Twin Cities – 5K – 25:33

Race Takeaway: Even if I’m not prepared, it’s good to keep racing.

This weekend is the We Care Twin Cities race events in our town. Plus I will be racing every day because after doing the local 5K Friday and 10K Saturday, I am driving up to run Quad Cities Half Marathon Sunday morning. I am in no way prepared to run half marathon or this much in one weekend, but eh I figure I should survive it. I would rather go for it than not even try, especially since we are having great weather this weekend!

Friday night we grabbed a quick dinner and headed over to the expo to pick up our packets and shirts. Rob would be completing the “half challenge” (5K + Half Marathon) and I would be doing the mini-challenge (5K + 10K), which had a sweet medal made of wood. The 5K start is right next to the expo, so it’s logistically really easy. It was sunny and very warm at the start, 6pm.

While the 5K race is small in attendance, it feels bigger because it runs on our trail system, the Constitution Trail. It makes for a very congested start and we stay in the back since we had Chase in the stroller. It took about a .5 mile before we broke out of the crowd a bit and could set our own pace. I wanted to push myself and have a better time than last year, but not over do it and wear myself out either since there were more races still to do. I was able to accomplish my goal and complete in 25:33, beating last years time by a little bit. Plus I felt good afterward, so I was hopeful the 10K would well tomorrow. I got 3rd in my Age Group and Rob got 2nd in his.

2014 Run Galesburg Run – 5K – 27:26

Race takeaway: Running with a stroller is hard work! 

Sunday Rob and Drew ran the Run Galesburg Run Half Marathon and Chase and I ran the 5K. This would be my first time pushing Chase in her stroller in a race. All of our past races with Chase Rob has done the pushing. It was a very warm morning, 70 degrees and sunny, and it was only 7am.

Logistically this is an easy race to get to. The start/finish is the same location and we can part in the lot right next to everything.

I forgot to pull Chase’s sunshade up for the picture. At least it provides good coverage!

Since it’s a smaller race, there are no start corrals and the half marathon and 5K start together. The 1 mile walk begins just a few minutes after that. Strollers were asked to line up in the back so we took our position at the end. Running with a stroller in any race is a challenge. You have to be very mindful to not to clip a runner with your wheels, especially when some runners don’t run a straight line and make sudden movements or go to a dead stop or walk without moving to the side. Also passing people requires taking the outside edge most of the time. Collectively this makes for a slower time because we easily get stuck in pockets of people that are going a different pace and it requires extra maneuvering. This race only half of the road was marked off for the race so it made for congestion in many spots. Regardless I’m just so happy this race allowed the 5K to have strollers.

I was interested in just getting a good workout and not running anyone over or tipping the stroller since this was my first time alone. I wasn’t used to running without full arm movement and it took a lot more upper body strength than I originally anticipated. Chase loved the run the entire way and just quietly took in the view. I kept good distance between me and other runners when I could and then just sped up anytime there was an open pocket of space. At then end it was a total success and we finished in 27:26. The volunteers even gave Chase her own medal. 🙂

Afterward we waited around and cheered Daddy in. He finished in 1:50:31. Drew ended up having to help a lady that went down on the course. He and another runner made sure she got water and medical attention. He finished in 2:27:17.

2014 IL Marathon Weekend

5K Race Takeaway: Helping a friend reach a PR is so much fun!

Half Marathon Takeaway: Sometimes it’s just about finishing.

IL Marathon weekend started like usual with picking up our packets and running the 5K the night before.

  • Rob and I would be completing the Half I-Challenge by running the 5K Friday night and the Half Marathon Saturday morning.
  • Drew would be doing the Full I-Challenge by running the same 5K and then completing the Full Marathon Saturday.
  • This would be our friend Katie’s second 5K and she was looking to improve her time from her first race. We decided to run together since we were taking it easy and we could help Katie get her PR.

Let’s just say this is the closest we have ever done a packet pickup and I was stressed. 🙂 I normally like to be at race events super early, but this was cutting it WAY too close, we were there just 15 minutes before the expo ended. Whew!

This year the 5K started on time and we eased our way into the start as the crowd got moving. I talked to Katie when she seemed to need encouragement and I tried to stay quiet when she looked like she was pushing hard and was focused. Rob and Drew ran with us and were enjoying joking around along the way. It was such a fun time running together as a posse.

Katie was able to push herself and take 2 minutes off of her time and finished in 36 minutes. Go Katie!

BTW….notice that Rob wore the wrong bib number to the 5K? 🙂 A good lesson learned! Anyone else done that before?

Afterward we headed home to get some rest.

The next morning we were up at 3am and on the road by 4:20am. We were way ahead of the 7:00am start and so I was much more relaxed about things than the night before. 🙂 We killed time doing the normal runner routine: put on bib (the correct one Rob!), get fuel into Spibelts, go to the bathroom a 100 times, ask Drew if he is ready about a 100 times. 🙂

The weather was gorgeous, 50s, sunny, and it was going to get quite warm. Beautiful if you are running the half, potentially miserable if you were running the full. Yet we stayed optomistic that it would be a good day for everyone.

Finally it was time to line up and say bye to Katie. Katie hung out at a nearby Starbucks to see us off. In the past the course has come back on the same road so I thought it would be a good opportunity for Katie to see us again around mile 10. Apparently the course had been updated and that was not the case. Whoops! Katie was able to find the course and see Drew one more time around the halfway point and he was looking good!

My race wasn’t going so well. It wasn’t going well from the beginning, which is always a bad sign. The first mile my legs felt dead. Rob was encouraging and said “maybe they will shake out in a couple of miles”. Unfortuantely that never happened. It was just one of those days where I felt like I was dragging my tree trunk legs around. I got to the 10K at 57 minutes. From there things just worse, I was just out of gas and ready to be done. I was off pace and missed my opportunity to be on live TV at mile 10 (info at the bottom of the post). I gave the crew high 5s and trudged on. Around mile 11 Rob was trying to keep me in good spirits and reminding me we were just out to have fun and that we hadn’t been training. I then said “true, and at least I’m not injured, I just have no gas today”. Well those words came back to haunt me at mile 12. I missed seeing a small bump in the road and tripped. One of those slow motion trips and I tried to catch my steps, but after three awkward stumbles I hit the ground on my right hip, scraped both hands and twisted my right ankle. I was flipped over now facing backward, seeing other runners coming up to me asking if I were okay. I laid there saying “go, go, go” and motioning them to keep on running. Rob was said “I’m not leaving you!” and I was like “no, not you, them!”. 🙂 A cop came up and help Rob get me to my feet. I haven’t been injured like this since a training run in 2010.

I think hobbled for what felt like a quarter of a mile. I started to cry from the pain, but mostly because my hands were so bruised I was worried I wouldn’t be able to pick up Chase. I just wanted the race to be over. At least I fell with only a mile to go, but it was hard to be near all the spectators and feel the energy of the finish and be so wounded. I told Rob I wanted to “run” in and so I ran/hobbled as best as I could to the finish. It’s probably worth mentioning that I didn’t care for the half marathon finish that wrapped around the side of the stadium. The surface was different and there were stumps from lights in the ground that would be a tripping hazard for people like me. In the end I finished: 2:12:54

With my injury I plopped down on a couple of bags of ice. I didn’t get our typical finishing pictures.

Afterward we grabbed some food and Rob went out to meet Drew around mile 23. I found Katie and we waited for the guys to get back. Drew was having an excellent run and was set for a huge PR, but after mile 20 he ran out of gas. The temps got up to 80, I’m sure that didn’t help. That’s part of marathoning though, sometimes it just doesn’t come together. Drew was able to tough it out and finish it: 5:25:17

2013 We Care Twin Cities – 5K – 25:42

Race Takeaway: Setting a healthy family example is such a wonderful responsibility.

The We Care Twin Cities race weekend includes a 5K Friday night and 10K and Half Marathon Saturday morning.

This race weekend almost didn’t happen for us. Chase was sick with hand/foot/mouth all week. She had just a couple spots and it never spread worse, thank goodness. But it was clear she was not herself and wanted to be held constantly day and night. It made for a very long week, which included me sleeping sitting up for 6 days straight. Needless to say I was drained. We just took each day as it was and decided if Chase wasn’t feeling well we wouldn’t be running. Thursday her spots were gone and she seemed to be getting back to herself. By Friday morning she seemed back to good and we took her to daycare to see how she did for the day. She had a really good day so we figured we would give the racing a try. However, I was signed up for the half marathon and so was Drew. We decided that we would downgrade our races to the 10K and all run together instead.

Friday’s packet pickup was at GE Park with the Kids Fun Run and 5K on the Constitution Trail. Packet pick up was easy and quick. This race revolves around energy management and environmentally friendly choices. Which meant that the race would also look for improvements, including having trophies from recycled/donated awards from any sport.

Also, the We Care Twin Cities races would have the Hydrapouch for water stops, instead of cups.

I’m all for environmentally friendly opportunities, but I’m not yet sold on these as a viable solution. Each runner received one in their race packet. I haven’t looked into the carbon footprint to make one of these, but it just seems that this versus paper cups that this would be less friendly if you don’t use this for more than one race. I can’t imagine how many of these will get tossed in the trash and never used. Also, this is a self serve option, which seems depending on the size of the race would make for congested water stops. While that was not the case during our races, we brought our own water since we had the stroller to stow it in.

So my question to you is, have you used these before in a race? What do you think? Why do you love them or hate them? Do you think these will become more popular at races?

So back to the 5K….as I was saying packet pickup was a breeze and we waited for our race to start at 6pm by watching the kids fun run. It was so awesome to witness all these families out with their children encouraging a healthy lifestyle of running. We got to see some of our friends with all of their kids and it’s just a fun site to see the whole family taking part. It’s going to be so fun to see Chase running in these races and getting her medal. 🙂

The 5K was a small field of people and we were the only stroller. We started in the very back. It proved challenging because the path of the Constitution Trail isn’t wide enough for even the smallest race, so it gets congested easily. We carefully passed people when possible and finally got out in the open to set our own pace by Mile 1. The course winds through Tipton Park, which has sometimes caused race path direction confusion (more on that for Saturday’s race), but they had this course well marked with volunteers pointing the way.

It was a perfect night for running and we really enjoyed this race. I pushed as hard as I could, even though I hadn’t been running and was so exhausted from the past week. I was able to fight through it and come out with 25:42, which was an improvement on my previous post-baby 5Ks and good enough for 1st in my age group and 3rd in Rob’s age group.

Again, Chase slept the whole way while running. I think she really enjoys our running time. She usually looks mesmerized by the trees, sky, and breeze and then peacefully closes her eyes and starts to snooze. 🙂

We didn’t stick around for awards though. We haven’t done an evening race with Chase before and it was definitely getting close to her bedtime. So we got her home, fed, and ready for bed.

2013 Danvers Days – 5K – 27:02

Race Takeaway: I’m not ready for inclines.

Today Drew and I ran the Danvers Days 5K. Rob and Chase were our pit crew. 🙂

This race is where I have my PR of 19:50 back in 2010. The course has quite a few turns as well as some small hills and inclines. My goal for this race was to improve upon my time from last weeks race. Drew’s goal was to PR. Our plan was to run together for the first 2 miles and then each of us give whatever we have left the rest of the way. We went out and did a warm up of 1.25 miles and then visited with friends before lining up.

Our plan was to hold back the first mile and then kick it up about 15 seconds the second mile. It was hard to hold back and not get pulled into the excitement of the race, but Drew and I kept it in check. We came across the first mile as planned.

Then the inclines start. I struggle through the first and already by the second my legs feel smoked. Drew pulls away from me just before mile 2 and is looking strong.

The next set of inclines and struggle through it, unable to catch Drew in front of me. Drew finished in 26:48 and met his goal of a PR by taking of 7 seconds! I finish in 27:02 and didn’t make my goal of improving from last week. I get 2nd in my age group though. I’m bummed I didn’t do better, but I recognize that it’s going to take time. I just hope to still make Chase and Rob proud that I’m trying hard to keep improving.

Race Takeaway: Just get out there and get moving.

Saturday, August 10th I ran my first 5K since giving birth to Chase 8 weeks ago. I was in no way in shape to race so this would be just a chance to get out and have another workout. I’ve been running only when it’s worked with our schedule. Each run ranging from 2 miles to 6 miles, but with no consistency at this point.

My goals were very easy: 1) get in a workout, 2) try to beat my 5K time when I was 7 months pregnant

The weather was perfect, especially for August in Illinois. It was upper 60s / low 70s and sunny.

This was also Chase’s first real outing with the public. 🙂 We didn’t have her out and held or touched by anyone since she still very young. She just hung out in her car seat that we attached to our Mountain Buggy Terrain. Rob and Chase watched me race since Chase’s head/neck strength is still developing and this course would have bumps in it as it crosses a gravel lot.

It was nice to get out and see our friends and catch up on how their racing was going this season.

I got in a 1 mile warm up beforehand. Then I lined up about middle of the group, knowing I wouldn’t be taking off very fast. Still my first mile was faster than I planned and I am still re-learning how to gauge my effort. This race is an out and back and is on a road that is exposed to the sun and it did feel quite hot halfway through.

By mile 2 my legs were smoked and I just held on to finish as strong as I could. It made me realize how hard racing really is! It feels harder than I remember anyways. 🙂

IL Marathon Weekend – 8.5 Months Pregnant

This weekend was the IL Marathon events in Champaign, IL. This event has evolved and improved over the years.

2009 – IL Marathon Expo

Over the years the IL Marathon has added a 5K option on Friday night. If you complete the 5K and then one of the other races Saturday (10K, Half Marathon, Full Marathon) you get either a Mini-I Challenge, Half I-Challenge, or Full I-Challenge medal as well.

This year being 8.5 months pregnant I would be tentatively participating by walking the 5K and 10K if I was feeling up to it. Last year we ran the 5K at an easy pace before our marathons. This time Rob would be walking with me. The 5K has 6,000 participants and is very crowded. It’s a relaxed environment and it appears that running strollers may be allowed to (always check first though). It’s a great way to get into running if you haven’t raced a 5K before because it’s a casual environment. If you are a seasoned racer, just expect for this to be more about a casual pre-event to Saturday.

The 5K started at 7:30pm and I wish I would have brought my jelly ring that has lights in it. This would be a good race to bust out any glow necklaces, etc.

Rob and I walked with a little running mixed in. It was awesome to have so many people cheering “Go pregnant lady!” and “Go Mama!”.

I have to say being pregnant and staying active has really changed my outlook on running. I used to focus more on my running times and the race aspect of it all. Being forced to slow down has allowed me to enjoy the environment and appreciate the running community in a way I hadn’t before. Seeing so many different people: ages, weight, health conditions toughing it out. I always enjoyed seeing people out working hard, but now I was witnessing it mid-race and it is awesome! I said to Rob, “this confirms for me there will NEVER be an excuse or reason to not be out running a race”. Okay the only reason would be a doctor saying ‘no’, but that would be the only reason. The people around us were doing it and it reaffirmed for me that this is something I want to do forever.

We finished in 44:22 (14:17 pace).

Saturday morning was perfect race weather: low 50s, no wind (later it got up to 8mph), a little overcast. We were up at 3:30am and got on the road about 4:30am. We were parked and settled before 5:30am and got to catch up with some of our friends that were also running.

I got to walk with my friend Jaime. Rob and I both had our phones in case anything came up with me and the baby. Jaime and I walked very casually and time flew as we just girl talked the whole way. Again, I got lots of encouragement from people along the way for being out active while being pregnant. We decided to count how many people said something along the way and I think we came up with 22 compliments. 🙂

I was expecting to need to stop a few times for the bathroom, but actually I felt fine and made it the whole way without any pit stops. The funniest thing that happened on our walk was that about .5 mile to the finish. This older lady in the run/walk lit up a cigarette and was smoking while walking! We couldn’t believe it! Then she started to pick up her pace and I was like “oh hell no, we have to pass this lady”. So we picked up our pace and ran into the finish to get away from this lady and also because it’s fun to run into the finish of Memorial Stadium on the 50 yard line.

Rob texted me while running the marathon, which I immediately knew if he is texting, it’s not going well for him. He had leg cramping earlier into the race and was just toughing it out to finish. He finished in 4:07:38 (9:27 pace) and got his 11th marathon completed.
